Lord Shiva is one of the greatest gods in the Hindu
trinity. He used to mediate for long hours. One, Shiva was away from Kailas. Hmmm. I need my own gana to guard my
palace. Gana means attendants. I shall create one for myself. The next day when
Parvati went for her bath. She gathered saffron paste from her own body and
sculpted an image of a handsome young boy and brought it to life. Oh! I am so happy.
The boy bowed to her. Mother what do you want me to do? My son, take this staff
and stand in the entrance. I am going to take bath. Let no one enter without my
permission. I will carry out your orders mother.
One day as usual when the boy was on guard Shiva
came there. He was surprised to find the entrance being guarded by a boy. Hmm.
I have never seen him before. Who might he be? Shiva walked towards the door.
Stop, it is mother Parvati’s order that no one may enter. Ahmmm.. boy, do you
know who I am? I am Parvati’s husband and the lord of Kailas. I do not care who
you are. My mother has instructed me not to let anyone in so go please go away.
Shiva now became furious. He returned to his
palace and called the ganas. Ganas, teach a lesson to the boy who is guarding
the Parvati’s palace. The Ganas, who went there to fight with the boy, soon
learnt that their opponent was more than a match for them. Many of the Ganas
were injured and they fled the battle. The boy resumed his duty. Meanwhile, the
commotion at Kailas had not escaped the eyes of the other gods. Let’s us go to
Shiva. Yes, we need to help him. Shiva was glad to find them and narrated the
whole story. Do not worry I will talk to him after all he is a young boy.
Brahma went on his peace-making mission but he was not even given a chance to
speak. Ganesha threw his club. Brahma who realized the power of Ganesh vanished
in the air. Oh Lord Shiva I….I cannot.
This matter has gone too far. The boy has left us
with no choice but to fight. Immediately lord Shiva called Nandi. Nandi take my
ganas and teach a lesson to that boy. Immediately Brahma, Vishnu, Nandi and Ganas
launched full fledged battle against the boy. When Parvati learned what was happening,
she became furious. My husband had brought in so many great and powerful
warriors to fight one small boy. I will not allow anything happen to my son.
Parvati created two supernatural beings, Kali and Durga. Goddess Kali and
Durga, I order you to destroy everyone. I order you to help my son who is been
surrounded by the Gods and Ganas. The two beings rushed to the boy’s assistance.
Kali swallowed up the enemy’s weapons and fired it back at them. Durga took the
form of lighting and struck the enemy. The God and Ganas were thoroughly
routed. They immediately returned to Kailash and apprised him of what had
happened.
I cannot stand this
anymore. I shall put an end to this menace right away. Everyone followed Shiva
to the battlefield. The boy again started to attack. Shiva was astonished at
the valour and the power of the boy. This boy is more than a match for the best
of warriors. I can win him only by a cunning way. As Vishnu engaged the boy in
ferocious battle. Shiva came up from behind and severed the boy’s head with his
trident. The boy lay dead. There was dead silence for a moment. The next moment
everyone cheered except for Shiva.
What have I done? How can I face Parvati now? Her
son was mine too, and I have killed him. It was a mean and shameful thing to
do. Soon Parvati heard the news and her grief had no bounds. The Gods and Ganas
who killed my son by unfair means shall pay for this outrage with their lives.
Out of anger Parvati called kali and Durga and ordered them to destroy everyone.
They both immediately carried out the order. Kali and Durga devoured everyone
whom they saw. The gods trembled. Finally, gods led by Brahma and Vishnu ran to
Parvati. Mother Parvati please forgive us and summon your goddesses. We will do
whatever you say. Have mercy on us. Please!
I have lost my son. If you restore him to life and
give him an honorable status among the Gods I shall recall my powers- not otherwise!
Gods returned to Shiva. Oh lord please revive the boy and save us. Shiva who
was already feeling guilty immediately accepted to revive the boy. Ganas go and
bring me the head of the first living being you find sleeping with his head
turned towards the north.
Ganas went in different directions. Soon they came
across an elephant sleeping facing northward. They cut of its head and brought to
Shiva. Shiva placed the elephant’s head on the boy’s trunk and recited a
mantra. The next moment the boy sat up as if getting up from sleep. Gods took
him to Parvati. My son! I am glad so to see you alive. Parvati forgive me my
arrogance. This brave boy you have created shall be a son of mine too. And I
will make you the leader for all my ganas and will be addressed as Ganesha.
From now on you shall be worshipped first, before all the other gods. You shall be also called as Vighneswara-Remover
of obstacles. Bless you my son. Thankyou Lord.
